Dialogues des Carmélites is Francis Poulenc's second and longest opera. Inspired by the play by Georges Bernanos, this powerful drama tells the story, based on real events, of a community of Carmelite nuns executed during the years of terror that followed the French Revolution. To do this, Poulenc wrote a highly dramatic and melodically inspired score with a vocal treatment against the trends of the avant-garde airs that predominated in post-war European music. “My nuns can only sing tonal music. You must forgive them".
