On the occasion of... Lessons in love and violence

The Music Commission of the Círculo del Liceo hosted the talk in English "Edward II, by Christopher Marlowe" by Douglas Friedlander, member of the Club and Dr. in English Language and Literature with a specialty in Shakespeare Studies.

George Benjamin’s 2018 opera Lessons in Love and Violence is based chiefly on Edward the Second (1592), a powerful exploration of kingship, kinship, power, sex and politics, by the English Renaissance playwright Christopher Marlowe.  After Shakespeare, Marlowe was the other great playwright of England’s Elizabethan age. Edward the Second focusses on the relationship between King Edward and his favorite courtier, Piers Gaveston.  Marlowe explores sex, jealousy and monarchy in a rich, sensual language new to drama.  In this talk in English, we will look at the elements in Marlowe’s play that inspired Lessons in Love and Violence.
Douglas Friedlander was an Assistant Professor and Teaching Fellow in both New College and the School for University Studies at Hofstra University, on Long Island, New York.  He also served as Chairman of the Architecture Committee and the Education Committee of New York’s National Arts Club. He holds a Ph.D. in English Language and Literature with a specialty in Shakespeare Studies, and has taught courses in Shakespeare, Greek Tragedy, and the History of Drama.
