Il pirata premiered at the Teatro alla Scala in 1827 obtaining a resounding success. After a while, it fell almost into oblivion, unlike three other great Bellinian operas: Norma, I puritani or La sonnambula. Within the "renaissance" of the mid-20th century, the versions by Maria Callas (1958) in Milan, or Montserrat Caballé at the Liceu (1971), where it represented its premiere, stand out.
